Price checker
An estimated price range for a plate, worked out from asking and sold prices of similar plates on this site.
Estimate only, not an appraisal or valuation. Based on a small set of listings on PlateYard. Real prices depend on what a buyer will pay, and plate values can fall as well as rise.
How the estimate works
- We look at plates on the site with a price (active asking prices, and sold prices where the seller chose to share them) in the same category only. If you don't pick a category we guess one; numbers and 1 to 3 character plates are certain, anything else is a guess and the result is flagged low confidence.
- Each one gets a similarity score: +3 same length, +1 if one character longer or shorter, +3 same category, +2 same make-up (all letters, all numbers, or mixed), up to +3 for shared characters, +2 if it reads the same with lookalikes (5=S, 1=I, 0=O, 8=B).
- We keep the 8 closest plates scoring 5 or more. If fewer than 3 qualify, we use the 5 closest in the category and flag the result as low confidence. You need at least 2 to get a range.
- The range runs from the 25th to the 75th percentile of their prices, and the middle is the median. Sold prices count twice because they are real outcomes, while asking prices are hopes.
This is a rough guide built from a small marketplace, not a professional appraisal or valuation. Don't rely on it for insurance, tax or lending. Personalised plates aren't an investment product: values can fall as well as rise.
